The Mentored Clinical Scientists Development Program (MCSD)

Formally known as the K12 Mentored Clinical Scientists Development Program.

Housed in the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR), the main objective of the MCSD program is the development of clinical investigators pursuing academic careers. The program offers scholars protected time, opportunity for funded clinical research, and strong mentoring. Scholars receive 75% protected time during the award period and are supported for 2 years. This program is available to all health care - related schools at the University of Michigan.

Under this award, scholars have 75 % protected time (maximum base salary supported by this mechanism is $100,000), $15,000/year for research expenses and up to $5,000 tuition annually. The MCSD program provides 37.5% salary support with the other 37.5 % being matched by the individual’s department. Scholars are expected to participate in a training program in clinical research and to work on a research project under the guidance of a lead mentor and a scientific advisory committee. This institutional support can be extended for an additional year, following a successful competing renewal application. The MCSD institutional support should allow scholars to successfully compete for individual awards such as K23, VA Career Development or R01 awards.

If you have any additional questions about this opportunity, please do not hesitate to contact our office via e-mail at mhelms@umich.edu. If a candidate wishes to discuss this award before submitting an application, we will be happy to arrange for a meeting with our program director.
