Mentored Clinical Research Project

Trainees will identify a mentor in their area of clinical research at the beginning of the program.  Under guidance from the mentor, the trainee will prepare a proposal that describes the clinical research project to be undertaken that can be completed in the period of one year.

Each Trainee has their own Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) composed of their faculty mentor, a mentor advisor, an advisory council member, and a University biostatistician.  This committee will be akin to a thesis committee.

The Trainee will carry out the clinical research project design, data collection, data analysis, and preparation of a report summarizing the results.  Work will be supervised by the SAC and should take approximately 12 months, during which the trainee will participate in the formal didactic core curriculum and other program components.

In the process of the Trainees becoming independent clinical researchers, Trainees are encouraged to be responsible for arranging project evaluations at appropriate intervals, to meet with their mentors frequently to discuss the status of their projects, and/or seek additional help from the Advisory Committee as needed.  It is expected that they will dedicate a minimum of 4 hours per week to the project for a total of 9 credit hours towards the M.S. degree.

“Meet the Investigator” Series

Trainees meet on a monthly basis (during the OJ/OC weekend) to discuss their projects.  Each trainee has responsibility for one seminar per year of the program, entitled: "MEET THE INVESTIGATOR" at which they present their proposed research project; progress made in data collection; difficulties encountered and strategies for solving those problems.  The seminars will be facilitated by the presenter's mentor.  The purpose of these seminars is to create a cohesive group of trainees learning about opportunities for establishing collaborative alliances and gaining perspective of the multi-disciplinary nature of research.

Furthermore, by each Trainee's presentation of their projects once per year of the Training Program, it is expected that the trainees will see an on-going process of their colleagues work as it develops from beginning to end.
