Team Mentoring Pilot Program
The Education, Career Development, and Mentoring Program of MICHR will partner with the Department of Internal Medicine to pilot a program designed to facilitate team-based mentoring for select junior faculty members. more >>Team Mentoring Pilot ProgramOverview of the program: The Education, Career Development, and Mentoring Program of MICHR will partner with the Department of Internal Medicine to pilot a program designed to facilitate team-based mentoring for select junior faculty members. The program will initially select junior faculty members to participate in a structured team-based mentoring program. A scientific advisory committee, consisting of a lead scientific mentor, at least one co-mentor, a statistical advisor, and an external (MICHR) advisor, will be formed for each faculty member in the program. The MICHR advisor will be responsible for general career development advice and overseeing the mentoring process. MICHR personnel, in collaboration with the School of Public Health, Department of Biostatistics, will assist faculty members in identifying appropriate mentors/scientific advisory committee members, as needed. Mentees will be encouraged to select a diverse committee membership including individuals from basic and clinical sciences. Junior faculty members will be expected to meet regularly with individual mentors and the Scientific Advisory Committee will meet on a semi-annual basis. At each of these committee meetings, the faculty member's research, career progress, and career development plan will be reviewed and committee members will provide constructive feedback to the mentee. In addition to structured team mentoring, faculty participating in the program will have access to a wide array of MICHR resources, including mentor/mentee workshops, mentoring resources, assistance with identifying mentors and/or advisors, assistance with scheduling scientific advisory committee meetings, general career development advice, assistance with IND/IDE preparation, and assistance with grant writing.
Duration of Program: The program is renewable on an annual basis. It is anticipated that the scientific advisory committee will in general support the faculty member for three years.
Applicants::
- Candidates (faculty engaged in clinical or translational research) for the program include:
- individuals with existing K awards who are seeking a more structured mentoring process;
- individuals who anticipate submitting a K award or other career development award within the next 2-4 years;
- A maximum of 10 applicants will be selected to participate in this pilot program in 2009
Application Process:
Interested applicants should submit the following:- Career development plan: 1-2 page statement including the applicant's career goals, an overview of the candidate's research project, and a brief description of the candidate's career plan
- Letter of commitment from lead mentor
- If identified - statement of agreement from co-mentor, and/or statistical advisor
- Curriculum vitas of applicant and lead mentor (along with his/her history of mentoring)
- Letter of commitment from division chief including a statement indicating percent effort that the candidate is expected to devote to research
Completed applications and all supporting materials are sent via campus mail to:
MICHR c/o Shari Barnett
24 Frank Lloyd Wright Dr, Lobby M
