What is this service?

The new MICHR K12 is a two-year award that provides protected research time, mentorship, and competency-based career development for translational scholars with a doctoral degree in a clinical or health focus.

Awardees will receive career development training in addition to concierge-level support as they connect with the vast U-M resources. Individuals appropriate for this program are beginning their first faculty appointment or within the first 1-2 years of their faculty appointment at the University of Michigan.

Persons ready to prepare their own independent K are too senior for this new program. Eligible applicants can be from any U-M campus (Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn). Funding must be used within two years.

K12 scholars develop their own tailored training program that includes:

  • funding for salary, research, and career development

  • a translational research practicum

  • didactic course work in regulatory sciences, research ethics, biostatistics, and/or specialty electives relating to a field of interest

  • attendance at MICHR career development seminars

  • the presentation of research through national events

  • cross-disciplinary mentoring designed to assist with career development and the scholar’s translational project

  • focus on scientific communications and community relationships

Who can use this service?

Eligibility:

  • Individuals with a doctoral degree with a health science focus.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident.

  • Can be from any U-M campus (Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn).

  • Applicants eligible for this program are senior postdoctoral fellows with a full-time appointment at U-M and a commitment to a faculty position, as well as early-career faculty in the first few years of their appointment.

When should I contact MICHR about this service?

Applications require:

  • a biosketch

  • a 4-5 page research proposal with a translational focus

  • a plan for training and career development

  • 3 letters of reference

  • a strong mentoring team

  • a budget and budget justification
