Summer Research Program

For:

What is this service?

This ten-week full-time immersion program runs from late May through early August. The experience is designed to engage students in clinical, translational science, and health disparities research and inspire them to choose a career focused on translational science. Students can choose one of two tracks: health disparities and translational science.

Students will participate in hands-on research projects with U-M research teams. They will also learn the fundamentals of research through individual and team-based learning experiences. The program may serve as an internship for students who need to fulfill such requirements.

The program includes:

  • Orientation and required training in the protection of human subjects and the responsible conduct of research

  • Work with a mentor on an ongoing, funded research project

  • Classroom work

  • Team projects

  • Meet with community members who partner with academics in research

  • Participating students will be hired as temporary U-M employees and paid a salary

    Applicants will need:

    Letters of Recommendation

    U-M Students:

  • If you have a mentor, a letter of support from your proposed mentor, which can be counted as one of your two letters of recommendation, (include this in your PDF, or have them submit directly through Competition Space).

  • If you do not have a mentor, list in your essay up to three (3) MICHR faculty mentors whose research you are interested in. (This does not guarantee you will be working with one of these mentors.)

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation.

  • Essay (650 words or less) describing your research experience (if any), your research interests and specifically how they relate to health disparities or health equity, and how participating in this program would fit into your research career trajectory.

  • CV/resume

    Non-U-M Students:

  • Please list in your essay up to three (3) MICHR faculty mentors whose research area you are interested in. (This does not guarantee you will be working with one of these mentors.)

  • Please have two (2) letters of recommendation submitted through Competition Space directly. These two letters are NOT included in your PDF.

  • Essay (650 words or less) describing your research experience (if any), your research interests and specifically how they relate to health disparities or health equity, and how participating in this program would fit into your research career trajectory.

  • CV/resume
